1990: the birth of search engines
The first network search engines for the web in December 1990: WHOIS user searches date from 1982  and multi-network user searches by Know service robots first appeared in 1989. Microsoft first published MSN Search in Ink Tom's search results in the fall of 1998. In early 1999, the site began posting Look Smart entries between the Inktomi results. For a brief time in 1999, MSN searches used AltaVista results instead. In 2004, Microsoft began moving to its own search technology, powered by its own search engine (named msnbot).
